Oh I have been really inappropriate and have played the deaf card - but usually in situations of when I am with my parents or when with them and their friends. As an example, a group of us were travelling down to Banff for the Deaf Winter Games in '91, we stopped off at a Cafe for brunch. I told them that I was too tired to interpret and asked them if it is ok if I acted Deaf as well. They all thought it was humerous and agreed with my idea and so I did. During this time of which I shared with them some of the comments that I had over heard some of the serving staff had said. At the end of our "prime" dining experience, as we were leaving, I voiced thank you so much for the fabulous service. Jaws dropped. All of the people in my group laughed.

WOW
So many wonderful posts regarding the experiences as a Coda/Koda. Each post brought a thought to my mind and related to an event that happened in my childhood. I have never been to a Coda Conference, due to the location of where I am at, although I have always wanted to go.
However I am fortunate in that I have maintained close friendships with my Coda buddies from childhood and there is a fairly large groups of us around in our city. For those that have moved away to other parts of the country, we have still kept in touch.
I often wonder if other Codas felt closer to the Codas from their childhood than their own cousins or extended family members (who are not Codas or whom never took the time to learn the langauge).
I find that I struggle with establishing my role with my extended family and I do not have what I consider an indepth relationship with them. I am far more comfortable acting as the interpreter in the family gatherings than I am making small talk with them... despite the constant encouragement from the folks for me to NOT be the interpreter. But my relationship with my extended relatives although pleasant is a superficial relationship.
When I get together with the Coda buddies -to me they are my extended family. Perhaps it is the like experiences that bond us... or life long memories we share.... or both.
Anyway those are some thoughts that I wanted to share.

I love your blog! I wasn't sure where to pop in and make a comment. This was a very sweet story, so I chose to pop in over here.

I was really fluent in a lot of languages when I was young - 14-19. When I tell people that ASL was one of them, they look at me kind of funny. But I am proud that I did use it for quite a while. The knowledge has faded now with out use, just like French, Spanish, German, Portugese, and Italian that I studied in that same time period!

When I was young, I gravitated towards the deaf kids to be firends. I was 50% hard of hearing, so I was more sensitive to their lives than other kids at times.

While in college, I found myself in a circle of deaf friends. They took me dancing to deaf clubs, and we had a great time. I used to get calls from the operators to give me their phone messages all the time, this was in the 70's so that was our best option then.

I am signed up for an ASL meetup in my area, but I haven't gone to any yet.

You were a nice little reminder today!

Hugs,

Sally

I do agree with you on both counts, though.

I tried Live - it's not my thing! I got so frustrated and I am very internet savvy. There were two guests, so how do I know to talk to them when I don't know who they are?
